Direk Cathy reveals the source of her movie gimmicks

Star Cinema has definitely found another gem via My Only Ü as Box Office Movie Director Cathy Garcia-Molina explained its simple but heart warming plot in its recent press conference. “Tungkol po ito sa isang taong nagmamahal, at nagkataong yung taong mahal niya ay mamamatay na. Si Vhong (Navarro) ang may unrequited love kay Toni (Gonzaga) who’s dying. He thought so. Ang question lang talaga, kung ang taong mahal mo ay mamamatay na, ano’ng gagawin mo in the last days of her life?” The film’s music video (You Can’t Hurry Love) alone plus its publicity posters showing Toni Gonzaga and Vhong Navarro hanging on a clothesline have already captured the interest of many viewers. How did they come up with that idea anyway? “Yung poster, it’s actually a literal translation of putting oneself on the line for the other. Pinisikal masyado pero yun po yun,” she adds.

After the overwhelming success of Direk Cathy’s previous works, people can’t help but wonder where she gets creative inputs like the famous sun dance in A Very Special Love and the superman-super friends-kamay joke in My Only Ü. For this, she gives credit to the people who served as her inspiration. “Yun po talagang sun dance ay gawain po ng AD (Assistant Director) ko’ng si Panying back in You Are The One. Kapag umuulan po talaga, ‘Panying sundance na,’ magsa-sun dance ‘yan. ‘O kailangan ko naman ng rain, rain dance ka.’ May rain dance po talaga yun eh. For that movie (AVSL) it came as an inspiration. Nagpaalam ako sa kanya and yun buti po at nagustuhan ninyo. Yung ‘Ano ito? Super man. Ano ito? Super friends’ PM (Production Manager) ko po sa pelikula rin ang dahilan. Meron siyang antics na old jokes so sabi namin, bakit hindi natin balikan yung mga dating nakapagpatawa naman sa atin. Si Toni na lang yung nagdagdag ng panghuli, yung kamay,” she recounts.

Direk Cathy is really going back to the basics for she also included a scene where Toni and Vhong are trying to communicate through notepad scribbles instead of SMS or E-mail. It’s something reminiscent of AVSL’s Post It notes scene with John Lloyd Cruz and Sarah Geronimo. “Personally ako as a director ang hirap i-zoom ng text message. There’s really no lens that can capture it and. And it (texting) is so impersonal. Even up to now I believe na walang emosyon ang text. With sulat, with the way you write it—with all the exclamation marks and the strokes—mas may feelings, mas may emotions. So ako I chose that (doodling) over text. Actually kay Vhong yung eksenang yun. Siya naman ang nag-suggest nun,” she exclaims.

But there’s no doubt that Direk Cathy is one of most sought-after directors to date because of her personal touch in every movie that she brings to life. True enough, she seems to be a favorite director of ABS-CBN’s prestigious film outfit in the past three years. To which she humbly argues, “Hindi, nagkataon lang po na tag-hirap ngayon ng direktor at ako naman po ay exclusive sa Star Cinema. Tapos hindi naman ako taga-TV talaga. Legal na taga-pelikula lang ako from the very beginning. So my heart stays with film.”

Star Cinema’s My Only Ü is showing on October 29 in all theatres nationwide.
